Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with a basic overview of the legal framework of trade regulation within the European Union(ie within the internal market) as well as the regulation of trade with third countries under the common trade policy. In addition to the focus on the regulation of mostly economically-oriented freedoms, the aim of the course is also to provide information on related non-economic policies, such as consumer protection, employees and others.
Learning outcomes
Students will be orientated in the mechanism of functioning of EC/EU functioning as the supranational organisation, namely from the perspective of institutions and law. Students will thus acquire knowledge of the EC/EU position with respect to the member states, as well as in institutions functioning and they will understand the regulative function of EC law. Contentwise, they will get familar with only the basic rules of the EC single internal market (the remaining rules are included in the follow-up course).

  • 2. Internal market, basic freedoms.
  • 3. Free movement of goods.
  • 4. Free movement of persons and services.
  • 5. EU Competition law.
  • 6. Tax harmonization in the EU.
  • 7. Consumer protection in the EU.
  • 8. Common commercial policy of the EU.
  • 9. Area of freedom, security and justice.

The course takes the form of both lectures and seminars and related discussions, self study. Credit requirements active participation in seminars.

The course finishes with a written exam and a seminar paper.
