Course objectives
The course focus on sociology as a science concerned with structure and dynamic development of modern society as well as with the social structure and the development itself. The main course frame is based on the discipline of economic sociology.
The course is structured in according to three main goals:
1. Introduce students to sociology as a science that deals with modern (industrial) society. Students will get a chance to understand the relationship between sociological and economical perspective and they can adopt basic sociological concepts for description of social structure.
2.Get a basic orientation in social development and social structure. Students will be introduced to basic sociological concepts which are relevant for understanding the function of complex market societies. We will emphasize the ability of students to see market life from broader frame of reference.
3.Introduce to the main methodological procedures of the sociological research.
Syllabus
  • 1. What is sociology - the object of sociological inquiry, origins of sociological thought.
  • 2. Main theoretical approches in sociology, keynotes of main sociological concepts.
  • 3. Culture as a system of patterns and procedures of living, social determinaton of human being, socialization.
  • 4. Social organization - modes of formalization of human action.
  • 5. Social stratification - hierarchical arrangament of society, sociological interpretation of social inequality.
  • 6. Family as the basic social institution - family in the modernization process, contemporary views on family, term gender.
  • 7. Social research methods I - quantitative methodology.
  • 8. Social research methods II - qualitative analysis methods.
  • 9. Historical transformations of industrial society and its contemporary conflicts, sociological aspects of market relations.
  • 10. Formation of the Czech society after 1989 - sociological characteristic.
  • 11. Sociological view on problems of present Czech society, e.g. population ageing, the plight of the Roma – facts and sociological interpretations.

Teaching methods
The course takes the form of a lectures, seminar discussions and presentations. Students of full-time study will in addition have chance to try on the elementary application of the basic research procedures.
Assessment methods
The course is concluded by the written exam and student can attend the written exam provided that she/he fulfills given conditions:
1. achieving 75% active participation
2. presentation of the (short) paper
3. elaboration of the research project
4. Completion of an examination paper (minimum recquired score is 60%)
Important information! If student commits a prohibited act, such as usage of various forbidden tools, cribbing, taking out any part of the exam or any other cheating, teacher is allowed to interrupt an exam and to grade a student with F, FF or FFF according to the seriousness of the offence. Mentioned procedure relates to all the activities that are included to the final evaluation of the course (seminar work, essays, tests etc.).
