Course objectives
The course aims to convey the knowledge of long-term factors that lead to economic and monetary integration and the knowledge of monetary and financial tools of the European Union supporting these trends. Students will be explained background principles of the Economic and Monetary Union. They will gain knowledge about a current situation of the European Monetary Union and the Euro currency development. Further, issues related to enlargement of the European Union and influence of the EMU and Euro on applicant countries will be discussed.
At the end of the course students will:
- understand historical development of the EU, monetary and financial policy of the EU;
- understand requirements that the Czech Republic must fulfill in the area of monetary and financial policy.
Course Objectives:
Students will gain knowledge about a current situation of the European Monetary Union and the Euro currency development. Further, issues related to enlargement of the European Union and influence of the EMU and Euro on applicant countries.
Syllabus
  • Outline
  • 1. The role of Europe in the world economy after WWII, establishing ECSC, Euroatom, EEC, integration process in the Western Europe. Development of international and monetary relations in the world economy focused on Europe.
  • 2. An early European Monetary Union, history of Monetary unions, the role of European Payment Union in the process of liberalization and implementation of West European countries internal convertibility. Involvement of the Western Europe in international monetary system according to its influence over European monetary and economic integration.
  • 3. The role of the European Monetary System and European Currency Unit (ECU) in the process of European Monetary Integration. Characteristics and principles of Economic and Monetary Union (establishing, advantages, disadvantages).
  • 4. Realization of the Economic and Monetary Union, nearing the European Monetary Union, Background and main characteristics of the European Monetary Union and Euro, the single currency, in 1991-2002.
  • 5. Political and economic factors impacting on admission of member countries to the Monetary Union, present results of gradual Euro implementation, process of national currency abolition. The Role of the European System of Central Banks in the European Monetary Union.
  • 6. Impact of the European Economic and Monetary Union on economic, monetary and financial relations.
  • 7. Problems related to enlargement of the European Union, the role of particular applicant countries and next development of the European Economic and Monetary Union.
  • 8. Influence of the European Monetary Union on the Czech Republic, Euro, the single currency and its relation to the Czech Republic and to other transformational economies.

Assessment methods
Students will compile a work, which will be forwarded the day before the last tutorial at the latest. During the last tutorial a check test will be taken (testing all the topics treated during all previous tutorials). If a student cannot attend the check test or fails it, he/she can take a replacement check test, but no more than one replacement check test. The term of the replacement test will be uniform for all and only one replacement test term for all will be announced. The test is written and oral.
Students are allowed to take the test after the following requirements have been met:
- their seminar work has been handed over and marked with PASSED by a tutor.
- passing a check test (scoring at least 50%).
The resulting mark is made up of:
Check test evaluation (25%) + evaluation of the written test (50%) + evaluation of the oral test (25%).
To evaluate the performance of students the following scale is applied:
A 91 - 100%
B 84 - 90%
C 76 - 83%
D 68 - 75%
E 60 - 67%
F less than 60%

If a student commits a prohibited act, such as usage of various forbidden tools, cribbing, taking out any part of the test or any other cheating, teacher is allowed to interrupt the test and to grade a student with F, FF or FFF. In the case of a serious offense the suggestion of disciplinary proceedings will be triggered to Disciplinary Board.
