Course objectives
Main objectives can be summarized as follows:
- to extend knowledge of insurance industry;
- to teach how to use this knowledge in business environment more globally (special emphasis put on combining theory and practice);
- to analyze particular problems;
- to develop creative approach to solution proposal;
- to evaluate feedback logically.
Syllabus
  • Thematic plan and content of tutorials:
  • 1. Introductory seminar, organization of seminars, assessment criteria, criteria of completion of course, assignment of seminar paper
  • 2. Risks in civilian life and ways of their coverage
  • 3. Business risks and ways of their coverage
  • 4. Commercial insurance – one of possibilities of risk coverage
  • 5. Price of insurance and its determination, amount of premium
  • 6. Insurance classification in theory and economic practice
  • 7. Public and private insurance; check test No. 1
  • 8. Social risks and their coverage
  • 9. Social security system and its segmentation
  • 10. Social security and its revision in the Czech Republic
  • 11. Social security and its revision in Slovakia
  • 12. Social security in selected economicy of the European Union
  • 13. Life insurance as part and factor of social politics; check test No. 2
  • Tutorials are organised in three four-hour blocs, according to topics in this way:

Assessment methods
The course finishes with an oral colloquium. It will focus on subject matter treated in seminar papers.
Students may take the colloquium after the following requierements have been met:
a) processing, submission (in written and electronic form) and PowerPoint presentation of a seminar project of assigned topic reaching evaluation: passed. Evaluation of a seminar project is: passed or failed. In the latter case a student will not be admitted to a colloquium.
b) successful completion (passing) of the first and second check tests testing the knowledge acquired at tutorials. The pass mark for both tests is 6 points out of 10. Students will take the two tests during tutorial 2 and 3. If students are unable to attend the respective tutorials (reasons for absence will be judged individually by a tutor), they will take the tests at some other tutorials or in the case of test 2 during the first two weeks of the exam period. Both tests will be evaluated in the same way (passed / failed). The pass mark is 60%.
