Course objectives
The course s mission is to introduce students to the study of statistical sets and their indices. Students will learn about the problems of description and the basic characteristics of sample statistical sets, principals of the theories of probability and random variables. The cardinal part of the course is a section dealing with the quantitative description of some processes and dependences. The course focuses on an introduction to the study of regression and correlation analysis with emphasis placed on linear regression. To explore the chronologically observed indicators, the course also presents introduction to the study of time series and comparative indices. All these sections are illustrated by examples using particular statistical indicators of the Czech Republic s economic development.
Syllabus
  • Content of this course is divided into three basic parts. The first part deals with the descriptive statistics. The second one brings out the basics of Probability theory and Random variable. These two parts are then used and somehow summed up in the third part of the course: Testing of statistical hypotheses and statistical inference.
  • 1. Descriptive statistics Statistic file, variable, sample file. Process of statistical research. Classification of statistical file, frequency - absolute and relative. Statistical graphs. Descriptive functions: average, variance, percentile.
  • 2. Probability theory and Random variable Classical and statistical definitions of probability. Random variable, random function, distribution of random variable. Characteristics-mean value, variance. Standard distributions of random variable.
  • 3. Hypothesis testing and statistical inference Sample file, sample characteristic. Confidence interval, confidence level. Null hypothesis, 1st and 2nd order error, significance level. General framework of statistical test. Parametric and non-parametric test. Two-sample tests for mean and for variance.

Assessment methods
The course has a form of a lecture. The lecture (total of 12 hours) is divided into three parts (4 hours each). Main emphasis is laid on a self-study. The course is concluded by the written exam. Student can attend the exam provided that she/he hands in a two seminar works in a given extent and a structure to the obligatory date, Detailed information concerning the seminar work is available at interactive syllabi of the course in the IS MU. Important information! If student commits a prohibited act, such as usage of various forbidden tools, cribbing, taking out any part of the exam or any other cheating, teacher is allowed to interrupt an exam and to grade a student with F, FF or FFF according to the seriousness of the offence. Mentioned procedure relates to all the activities that are included to the final evaluation of the course (seminar work, essays, tests etc.).
