Course objectives
The objective of the course is to provide students with basic knowledge of effective interpersonal and group communication necessary for managing organizations providing financial services and for efficient dealing with their clients.

At the end of this course, students should:
- understand basic principles of interpersonal communication;
- know general principles of effective verbal communication, understand the significance of nonverbal communication for the interpretation of the verbal message;
- know what basic communication skills are and how to develop them;
- understand the term assertiveness and understand the significance of assertive behavior for the organizational communication quality;
- have information on the principles of group communication and understand the influence of group relationships on group processes and behavior;
- know what typical causes of organizational conflicts are and know basics of conflict management;
- be able to critically analyze the effectiveness of communication and communication channels in an organization.
Syllabus
  • The lessons take a form of three workshops in which both lectures and tutorials are combined.
  • Thematic blocks include the following:
  • 1. The process of communication and its principles, significance of efficient organizational communication. Historical development of interpersonal communication forms. Communication process, verbal and non-verbal communication. Message interpretation. Principles of efficient verbal and non-verbal communication. Interpersonal communication, group communication. Internal and external customer, significance of efficient communication for providing good quality services. Possibilities and methods for the development of communication skills. Personality communication types, efficient strategies for dealing with particular types. Basic communication skills. Asking questions: question types, advantages and disadvantages of individual types. Active listening – significance of listening, development of listening skills. Efficient argumentation and persuasion: choice of arguments, formulation of arguments, building arguments. Overcoming objections: objection types, procedure of overcoming objections. Presentation and analysis of Internal Customer educational video.
  • 2. Assertiveness and its significance. Assertive, passive, aggressive and passive aggressive behavior, characteristics, consequences. Assertive rights, assertive techniques. Intrapersonal and interpersonal contribution of assertive thinking and behavior. Basic assertiveness skills. Presentation and analysis of Communication Intelligence educational video.
  • 3. Organizational communication. Communication and relationships in work groups. Work teams, team roles, efficient team communication. Communication channels in organizations, influence of contemporary information and communication technologies on organizational communication. Organization conflicts and their resolution: conflict sources, positive and negative aspects of conflicts, conflict resolution styles, conflict management.

Assessment methods
The lessons take a form of three workshops (4-hour blocks) in which both lectures and tutorials are combined. Students have to write a seminar paper entitled “Analysis of Communication and Communication Flows in an Organization”. The form of the exam is written.
