Course objectives
The course precondition is that students have already passed a course on social policy during their bachelor degree programme. Its aim is to enhance and concretise basic knowledge about social security and delivery of social services, with focus on the Czech and EU conditions. At the end of this course, students should: • have comprehensive knowledge on policy of social security and social services, • be able to explain comparative models of social policy and their development • be able to explain motives of current reforms and potential and limitations of instruments used and discuss prospects and challenges of future reforms • have comprehensive knowledge on social security and social services policy in the Czech Republic • have their analytical, discussion and presentation skills improved. .

  • • Reminder: the role of social security and social services policy, history of social security systems • Principles and organization of social security and social services in the Czech Republic and EU • Core instruments in the area of social policy and their analysis • Examples of “sectoral” policies: o Social security policy and elderly people o Health security system and security system for handicapped people o Social policy and family o Unemployment and migration policy o Instruments for reduction of poverty • Social services and their management

Assessment methods
The course is delivered by lectures and seminars, with more weight on seminars. The exam consists from midterm exam and a final oral exam. Course requirements include also essay and its presentation. Requirements (including the literature) are specified further in the interactive syllabus and the downloadable study plan before the semester starts.
