Course objectives
Monetary Economics (PEMOEA) The subject continues and enhances the knowledge of the monetary sector acquired in Fundamentals of Macroeconomics. At the same time it serves as a prerequisite for optional subjects of financial specialisation. The subject matter will be further developed in obligatory courses World Economy and Economic Policy. The initial section is devoted to the historical development of money. Then the function and structure of financial market, measurement and behaviour of interest rates are explained. The focus of the course is theory of money demand and central banking, with emphasis on formation and regulation of money supply. Creation of balance in the IS-LM model is explained. The final topics cover the theory of exchange rates, their application in the central bank's policy, as well as issues connected with the balance of payments. Examination: written and oral.
