Course objectives
The course is a follow-up to the courses Financial accounting I and II and specifies the basic differences in accounting of commercial insurance companies. The course focuses on legal regulation of accounting of insurance companies, account classes, etc. Finally the financial statements of insurance companies are defined.
At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- understand and explain legal regulation related to accounting of insurance companies and basic procedures of posting simple economic transactions;
- analyze finacial statements of insurance companies;
- use accounting information for effective management of an insurance company.
Syllabus
  • 1 Specifics of accounting in insurance companies, legal regulation, principles of valuation in accounting of insurance companies
  • 2 Accounting of financial investments (land, buildings, deposits)
  • 3 Accounting of financial investments (securities and derivatives)
  • 4 Accounting of other assets - non-financial investments
  • 5 Accounting of claims and liabilities (insurance contracts)
  • 6 Accounting of receivables and payables (reinsurance)
  • 7 Accounting of other receivables and payables
  • 8 Accounting of equity and long-term liabilites (with exception of technical reserves)
  • 9 Accounting of technical reserves
  • 10 Effect of reinsurance on technical reserves
  • 11 Accounting of costs and revenues, technical and non-technical account
  • 12 Final accounts of insurance companies, preparation for financial statements
  • 13 Financial statements of insurance companies and their use for management of insurance companies
