Osnova
  • Writing Gab #4: Making abstracts less abstract
  • The Writing Gab returns! This time Abbie and Joe will tackle a tricky genre – the abstract. An abstract is more than just a dry summary of your paper or presentation. It’s also an argument, and an advertisement. You need to describe your work in a way that makes its purpose and its importance clear. At the same time, you need to show multiple audiences – researchers, publishers, and colleagues – that the work you’ve done has value, and deserves respect. And you need to do all that in only a few words! We have seen some reeeeallly boring abstracts in our day – and some amazing ones. So we’ll show you why many abstracts fail to make an impact, and offer some tricks and language you can use to make sure your research gets the attention it deserves. There will be time for your questions and suggestions, too.
  • Writing Gab #5: How to revise your paper – whether you have a week, or 5 minutes
  • We’ve all been there: You’ve written a paper – or, you’ve written something, anyway – and now you’re staring at the screen, and you’re stuck. Maybe you know there’s something missing, or something that’s still not perfect – but you don’t know what, exactly, and you don’t know how to find out. Or, maybe you think your paper is perfect! But you remember you thought that same way LAST time, and you still got scary red marks from your teacher or publisher. Worst of all, you’re stressing out because the deadline is, like, now. In this Gab, Abbie and Joe will take a very practical approach to revision. We know you don’t often have all the time you’d like to revise – so we’ll show you what WE would do if we had a week, two days, one hour, or only 5 minutes to put the final touches on your paper. And as always, we’ll open up a discussion so that you can share what has worked for you, and hear what others have done to help them see their writing from new angles.
