Course objectives

The International Security in the Modern World program is designed to give students an understanding of some of the fundamental international security issues and their implications for Europe and the world.
The participants of this course will:
• Come to understand dynamics of providing security in the past and present in the European continent
• Critically analyse the international organisations (such as the UN and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe) that deal with these issues, and
• Consider how Europe and the world has responded to these issues so far and the international responses that might be required in future for these and future global threats

Syllabus

• Module 1: Development of security arrangements in the European continent Instructor: Richard Turcsanyi
• • Conceptualization of security.
• • History of European security arrangements before WW II (plus a trip to Austerlitz)
• • Security in nuclear age: Cold War era (plus a visit to a shelter from the Cold War era)
• • Post Cold War era and current security complex in Europe
• • Trip to Budapest (visit of House of Terror, Holocaust Memorial Hall, lecture & discussion at OSF)
• Module 2: Military threats in modern times Instructor: Miroslav Mares
• • Armed forces, arms trade and perspectives of global conflict (plus a visit to a University of Defence)
• • Proliferation of CBRN weapons (plus a visit to NATO COE in Vyskov)
• • Insurgency and terrorism
• • Separatism and ethnic and religious conflicts (plus a visit to Roma Museum and Roma neighbourhood in Brno)
• • Trip to Vienna (OSCE, UN-IAEA, OPEC)
• Module 3: Non-military security threats in modern times
• • Energy security Instructor: Hedvika Kodouskova
• • Cyber security Instructors: Petr Svenda and Radim Polcak
• • Corruption and organized crime Instructor: Petr Kupka
• • Environmental security Instructor: Petr Martinovský
• • Trip to Prague (visits to Radio Free Europe, National Security Authority)

lectures, seminars, class discussion, site visits, excursions, presentations by professionals in the sectors, reading

Assessment methods

Mini-test: Set of short questions, on the preliminary readings and content of the week 20%, Final Test: set of analytical questions 30%, Essay (1,500-2,000 words)) 35%, In-class participation 15%. Late penalty 2% will be deducted per day for late work
