Cíle předmětu
It is often suggested that language teachers should engage in research or scholarship, but as busy practitioners with heavy workloads it is difficult to see how this might be achieved. Teachers are pulled in two different directions: action and research. So how might research be integrated into pedagogic practice? And what challenges and rewards might we expect to find, if we try it out ourselves? One recent form of practitioner research, known as Exploratory Practice (EP), suggests integrating research and pedagogy by using normal pedagogic practices as investigative tools. EP prioritises action for understanding (before attempting to solve problems), and encourages language teachers and learners to work together to investigate what puzzles us. In this two-day interactive workshop we will discuss the principles of ‘fully inclusive’ practitioner research in language learning and teaching. Participants are invited to consider what puzzles us about our language teaching (and learning) lives. We will then discuss ways of investigating classroom language learning and teaching, using our normal pedagogic practices as investigative tools. By including learners as well as teachers as co-researchers, we can conduct research that is entirely relevant to our language teaching (and learning) lives, thus enhancing our quality of life in the language classroom. We end by considering what practice as research might look like in our classrooms, and prepare for investigations into our own learning and teaching in the coming year. Please come ready for lively discussions about your own learning and teaching situations, as well as about exploratory practice in other parts of the world.

Dr Judith Hanks (Lecturer in TESOL) I have worked in TESOL since 1987, as a teacher, teacher educator and manager, in Italy, China, Singapore, and the UK. I first came to the University of Leeds in 1999, teaching EAP and directing pre-sessional and in-sessional courses, and working as a senior manager in the Language Centre for over a decade. In January 2013 I moved to the School of Education, where I teach both undergraduate and postgraduate students and jointly run the Centre for Language Education Research (CLER) seminar series. I have an international reputation, having been invited to present my work at conferences in Brazil, Estonia, Japan, Portugal, Turkey and the UK, and I regularly give plenary talks, presentations and workshops nationally and internationally.
In April 2014 I was interviewed at the IATEFL Annual Conference in Harrogate as part of the British Council IATEFL on-line series.
In May 2013 I was invited to give the plenary at the JALT PAN-SIG Conference in Nagoya, Japan. Following the plenary, I was interviewed by Darren Elliott about Exploratory Practice: https://vimeo.com/67543871
In May 2013 I was invited to speak at Kyoto University on the subject of Exploratory Practice in English for Academic Purposes. To see the video of the workshop, please follow the link: http://ocw.kyoto-u.ac.jp/en/opencourse-en/61
