Course objectives
The SWEUS Summer School is designed for university students who would like to improve their English speaking and writing skills while enjoying highly interactive and innovative teaching methods. In two weeks, the SWEUS students will: - develop speaking and writing skills common to a range of academic disciplines - experience a typical culture of a European university - be taught by highly qualified, experienced and dedicated international teaching staff - participate in project work, fun activities and creative learning tasks By the end of the course, the SWEUS students will: - develop the confidence to use spoken English in a multicultural European setting - improve their English writing skills in a variety of communicative styles - learn practical tips to broaden their language soft skills - expand their vocabulary and refine their grammar - get a better understanding of European culture
Syllabus
  • 17th -21st July Week I
  • begins by drawing students´ attention to the use of English language in academic contexts. It helps students to refine their grammar, widen their vocabulary and expand their functional language. It also offers a brief overview of academic skills in English. Later, it changes its focus towards speaking and writing skills. In speaking, it aims at improving students´ accuracy and fluency, and developing presentation skills and effective participation in discussions. In writing, it aims at fostering students´ awareness of academic writing style and the diversity of genres they may use while at university.
  • 24th -28th July Week II
  • focuses on practice of speaking and writing skills based on a variety of reading, writing and listening activities. It aims at developing students´ critical thinking and sound argumentation. It shows academic study skills in English in their complexity and aims at encouraging students to adopt a more autonomous approach to learning.
  • The summer school programme is flexible and will be tailored to the participants´ needs.
Assessment methods
All participants will receive a Masaryk University Language Centre Certificate of Attendance on successful completion of the whole programme.
