Participants must have a pre-intermediate knowledge of Czech Sign Language in order to register for this course. The course is intended for Masaryk University’s employees and other interested applicants.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to strengthen the participants’ knowledge of Czech Sign Language (Czech SL) through the analysis of videos in Czech SL. They thus have the opportunity to practice translation into Czech, work on their understanding of persons signing Czech SL and increase their awareness of Czech Deaf culture.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, participants will be able to;
- communicate fluently with Deaf people;
- better understand people expressing themselves in Czech SL;
- be familiar with the existing regional differences in Czech SL;
- increase their knowledge of the culture of Czech Deaf persons as a minority group.
Syllabus
  • One video in Czech SL is analysed each week. The chosen videos are mainly related to education and the cultural life of Czech Deaf people.
Literature
  • Jedná se o praktický kurz a není vyžadováno studium odborné literatury.

    This is a practical course and there are no compulsory study materials to be read.

Teaching methods
Analysis of the videos in Czech Sign Language, translation, discussion, reflection.
Assessment methods
There is no written exam at the end of the course. To successfully complete this course it is necessary to:
- attend the classes (80 per cent class attendance), any potential absence must be properly excused and needs to be discussed individually with the teachers;
- actively engage in ongoing discussions;
- do the tasks assigned by the teacher following her instructions.
