Students must be at least at the B1 level in English to enrol in this course. The course is also suitable for Upper-Intermediate English students (B2).

Course objectives
The course is intended for students with hearing impairment who want to improve their English language skills with a focus on communication in academic environment and student exchanges such as Erasmus+. The students will strengthen the language skills acquired in previous English courses, improve their ability to work with academic texts in English, and expand their vocabulary for international mobility. The presented activities are designed to promote students’ reading comprehension, increase their vocabulary and strengthen their grammar skills. The students will also work with transcripts (speech to text reports) of lectures and seminars given in English and use discussion fora to practice communication skills. The students will receive teachers’ feedback to their assignments.
Syllabus
  • The course is divided into seven units: five topics plus a course revision and a course evaluation. The topics have a 'two week' format; the course revision and the evaluation are planned to be completed in one week only.

  • Topic 1 Know your way and meet people
  • Topic 2 Understand and follow administrative instructions
  • Topic 3 Search for information on a website
  • Topic 4 Make notes and study based on a lecture
  • Topic 5 Follow a seminar discussion and contribute to it

Teaching methods
The course takes place online using the e-learning environment ELF (elf.phil.muni.cz) powered by Moodle. The students work independently in the course and must meet the deadlines which are well-known in advance. The course comprises different kinds of texts and videos related to university education and international mobilities. Students are also expected to contribute regularly to the discussion fora and to submit assignments; they will receive individualised feedback to their assignments from the teachers.
Assessment methods
There is no written exam at the end of the course. To successfully complete this course and receive credits it is necessary to do all the obligatory assignments and tasks.
