Course objectives
The aim of the course is to enable students to understand the importance of social policy in the context of social risks and problems arising as a result of contradictory economic, social and cultural development of the modern society. The course provides information on: (1) the main theoretical and ideological attitudes to social policy and the definition of social needs and problems, (2) basic sources and producers of social policy and services with an emphasis on the interpretation of the role of welfare state, (3) selected current social problems (unemployment and poverty, aging, family problems, cruelty and negligent care for children, social pathology, issues of ethnic minorities, opinion orientation in pluralistic society). This basic course is followed at Stage Two with the Social Policy course, which has an optional character.

Teaching methods
Presentation and class discuson related to introduced topic. Student prove knowledges through homeworks and its public presentation. Reading is a part of homework.
Assessment methods
1. continuous testing of knowledge during the semester in the form of 2 tests; 2. presentation of a seminar paper and elaborating a critical analysis of another seminar paper; 3. final oral exam (to be eligible to take the final oral exam, students have to gain at least 60% of the total number of points from seminar tests)
