Course objectives
Economy and Management of Non-profit Organizations The course follows primarily the knowledge acquired in courses Public Economy, Public Finance, Economy of Public Sector, Management and Law for Economists, and also takes into account students' experience gained in internships at organizations in the non-profit sector. In the first 4-hour consultation, attention is paid to the causes of the existence of non-profit-making organizations, the identification of their position within the national economy, as well as to the detailed explanation of requirements for a seminar essay whose quality is decisive in the assessment of knowledge in this subject. The second seminar is devoted to the typology of non-profit organizations in relation to their purpose and to the basic characteristics of their legislation, economy, management and funding. The other two seminars focus on the description and use of individual instruments of management, including strategic planning, basics of accounting, calculation, budgeting and taxes. The use of the individual management instruments in practice is documented in the presented seminar projects.

  • 3. NPOs in the international perspective. Economic indicators, employment, regional patterns.
  • 4. Mission, goals and activities of the non-profit sector.
  • 5. Foundations and endowment funds; legislative framework, perspectives.
  • 6. Public benefit corporations and church-run organizations.
  • 7. Non-profit organizations financing. Government grant policy towards the non-profit sector.
  • 8. Fundraising, grant proposals writing.
  • 9. Management, marketing and PR. Strategic planning of the NPOs.
  • 10. Accounting, taxing, auditing.
  • 11. Voluntary work within the non-profit sector.

Assessment methods
The course is concluded with an oral exam. Students are eligible to take the exam provided that they fulfill the condition of writing and presenting a seminar paper.
If students commit a prohibited act, such as using various forbidden tools, cribbing, taking out any part of the exam or any other cheating, the teacher is allowed to interrupt an exam and to grade a student with F, FF or FFF according to the seriousness of the offence. The mentioned procedure relates to all the activities that are included in the final evaluation of the course (seminar work, essays, tests etc.).

  • Tématický plán přednášek: 1Základní informace o kurzu. Vymezení funkcí neziskového sektoru v národním hospodářství. Různé přístupy k vymezení neziskového sektoru. 2Historie neziskového sektoru. NNO v ekonomických teoriích. 3NNO v mezinárodním srovnání. Ekonomické ukazatele, zaměstnanost, regionální vzorce neziskového sektoru. 4Poslání, cíle, funkce a činnosti NNO. Občanská sdružení - legislativa, ekonomické charakteristiky, perspektivy. 5Nadace a nadační fondy - legislativa, funkce v neziskovém sektoru, ekonomické charakteristiky, perspektivy. 6Obecně prospěšné společnosti a církevní právnické osoby - legislativa, funkce v neziskovém sektoru, ekonomické charakteristiky, perspektivy. 7Financování neziskových organizací. Státní dotační politika. 8Fundraising. Příprava projektů. 9Financování NNO ze strukturálních fondů EU. 10Řízení, marketing, komunikace a PR pro NNO. Strategické plánování v NNO. 11Účetnictví, zdanění, audit, kalkulace pro NNO. 12Přednáška externisty, vedoucího pracovníka vybrané významné NNO. 13Ekonomický rozměr dobrovolné práce v neziskovém sektoru. Přednášky a semináře probíhají obsahově podle uvedených tématických okruhů. Kontrolní testy v 7. a 13. týdnu jsou povinné (viz podmínky ukončení kurzu). Semináře jsou rozděleny na třináct bloků.

Assessment methods
The course is concluded with an oral exam. Students are eligible to take the exam provided that they fulfill the condition of writing and presenting a seminar paper.
If students commit a prohibited act, such as using various forbidden tools, cribbing, taking out any part of the exam or any other cheating, the teacher is allowed to interrupt an exam and to grade a student with F, FF or FFF according to the seriousness of the offence. The mentioned procedure relates to all the activities that are included in the final evaluation of the course (seminar work, essays, tests etc.).
