Course objectives
To fulfill their missions and provide vital programs and services, nongovernmental organizations must cultivate their financial and managerial resources. The Building Nongovernmental Capacity: Fundraising course is an introduction to, and survey of, the institutions, processes, and issues involved in raising money for NGOs. The primary goal of this course is to assist students in developing a broad base of knowledge about fundraising including the strategies, structures and management of direct mail campaigns, internet and telephone solicitation, personal solicitation, planned giving, capital campaigns, special events and grant writing. Drawing upon fundraising practices successful in the U.S., students will learn how to formulate fundraising plans as elements of broader organizational strategies, master the fundamental principles of successful fundraising practice and manage the fundraising function in order to achieve an NGO’s financial goals. The course will also touch on effective marketing and promotional techniques for NGOs.
Teaching methods
The course will be taught through instructor lecture, case study analysis and preparation of three short paper assignments.
Assessment methods
The final exam will be a short essay and multiple-choice format and cover application of fundraising principles and techniques.
