Course objectives
The course presents optimisation methods applicable in economic practice, especially in management and decision making. The emphasis is on methods of linear programming, mainly on the simplex method, duality and sensitivity analysis. Furthermore, methods of non-linear programming, integer programming and network optimisation are explored. Finally, an introduction to the solution of complex decision problems is presented including dynamic, stochastic and multi-criteria problems and problems of game theory. Students will be made familiar with the applications of the above methods in economics and the scope of knowledge of the relevant mathematical theories will be adjusted to meet this priority. The goal of the course is to provide students with an overview of the existing models, methods and their applications, to teach them how to construct mathematical models used to solve practical problems, and to explain the underlying theoretical principles of the basic methods. The information thus acquired is immediately applicable to problems of economic practice at all levels (micro- and macroeconomic) in virtually all economic specialisations. Students should be able to use the skills gained both in solving various optimisation tasks in their future practice and at further stages of their study. Prerequisites: Mathematics and Statistics. Examination form: written and oral.
