Course objectives
Practically oriented course aiming to give students solid background for final thesis defense, conference talks and presenting results at seminars. Focusing on compilation of electonic presentation, its logical structure, verbal and non-verbal sides of presentation, adaptation to audience feedback and handling of stage fright. During clases students will be preparing presentations on selected and technical topics. Presentations will be video recorded and thanks to individual approach, students will be able to improve on their presentation skills through one-to-one sessions.
At the end of this course the student will be able to outline a presentation on the thesis subject; create slides; give a presentation to an audience; respond questions from the audience.
Syllabus
  • Objectives of the presentation. Specifics of presentations by objective (thesis defense, conference talk, seminar presentations, recruitment ...). Specifics of presentations by their length. Different formats of presentations (1 minute, 4 minutes, 10 minutes, with electronic support, with a black/white board, without support). Timing of presentation content. How to make slides? Software for preparing presentation slides. Common errors in slides. Non-verbal communication, space, stance, politeness, eye contact. Common errors in non-verbal communication. Voice, non-lexical utterances, use of microphone. How to boost a presentation? Discussion with the audience. Unexpected events. How to overcome stage fright?
Teaching methods
Practical exercises on: summarization, giving presentation to an audience, working with a microphone. Presentation on selected topic, presentation on the thesis subject. Presentations will be video recorded. One-to-one sessions with students in order to focus individual needs.
