Course objectives
The course is designed to provide students with practical knowledge of Graeco-Latin medical terminology related mainly to the field of Physical Therapy on the basis of English. Students will gain command of grammatical phenomena and medical terminology necessary for understanding authentic medical reports They will also master English pronunciation of medical terms.
Learning outcomes
Graduates of this course will • acquire command of anatomical and clinical terminology related to Physical Therapy • learn basics of Latin grammar • learn proper pronunciation of English medical terms • be able to read medical reports, and understand abbreviations used in them
Syllabus
  • 1st Week: Course introduction, aims, content, Latin pronunciation, outline of Latin grammar system, main parts of the human body –Latin and English terms 2nd Week: Latin declensions, 1st declension (Latin and Greek nouns), adjectives, selected prepositions, types of fractures 3rd Week: Latin and Greek nouns of the 2nd declension, adjectives, classification of muscles 4th Week: Latin and Greek nouns of the 3rd declension, consonant-ending roots, types of injuries 5th Week: Latin and Greek nouns of the 3rd declension, i-stems, classification of disorders 6th Week: Latin nouns of the 4th and 5th declensions, terms expressing pain 7th Week: Adjectives of the 3rd declension, the most common abbreviations used in medical reports 8th Week: Comparison of adjectives, numerals, basic verbal forms, designation of cranial nerves, vertebrae 9th Week: Latin and Greek prefixes + suffixes, derived terms 10th Week: Compound words, names of physical therapy techniques based on Latin and Greek roots 11th Week: Authentic medical reports – reading with understanding, analysis 12th Week: Revision 13th Week: Exam test

Teaching methods
The course is taught in the form of seminars: reading, writing, speaking, grammar practice. Textbook lessons will be combined with teacher´s handouts. Regular homework will be required.
Assessment methods
Successful pass of written tests of the basic issues of discipline, defined syllabi, and passing a written exam.

FINAL EXAM: ONLINE written test followed by an oral exam (MS Teams). Oral exam comprises 2 parts: written test discussion (analysis of possible drawbacks, additional questions concerning grammar and vocabulary used in the test) + covering 1 of the oral exam topics.
