Course objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. apply theoretical concepts and results of current research in the analysis of the current trends in the sports industry. 2. understand the development of a global sport within the broader economic, political and social context 3. critically analyse and evaluate scientific literature related to the current issues in sport 4. actively participate in the final interactive workshop dealing with controversial issues relating to the sports industry 5. use the skills needed for their own research work and the literature review , in particular: • Apply acquired knowledge to solve practical problems and presentation of data • Academic writing / literacy • Communication / presentation - both orally and in writing, • Critical thinking and writing • Self-evaluation / reflection, including awareness and management of emotions • Interpersonal, including teamwork, negotiation and persuasion • The ability to focus on the labour market by using knowledge of the subjects of Professional Practice
Syllabus
  • The course will focus on the selection of the major current issues in the areas of national and international sport. Selection of topics will be updated and therefore the list of case studies topics are only indicative: I. The first six case studies will be devoted to the analysis of the application of the theoretical knowledge acquired in the previous study and practice , namely : - Management in sport - Marketing in Sports - Personnel management in sport - Application of the principles of project management in the organization of sporting events - Legal aspects of sport - Psychological and social aspects of sport - The use of knowledge in the field of sports practice II. The second set of case studies will present developments in sports management in an international context and topics will focus on the following issues: 1. The commercialization of sport 2. Economics and Politics of major sporting events. 3. Impact of new media technologies on the sport. 4. Sport and its importance for regional development. 5. The development of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. 6. Management of the global sport. 7. Influence of the environmental sustainability at the sports industry. 8. Regional case studies of the contemporary sports industry (e.g. North America, South Asia, Middle East).

Teaching methods
The course will use a variety of different teaching methods. Lecture, video presentations, participation in the conferences, visiting sporting events, student discussions and student-led seminars. The purpose is to maximize student involvement in the discussed themes to support the development of their critical thinking and innovative approach in solving various problems of practice in sport management. The course will encourage students to take advantage of the knowledge and skills acquired by previous study so as to strengthen the capacity of independent problem solving. The course requires active participation in the seminar group, and therefore their preparation for the seminars will require the study of the case studies materials in advance.
Assessment methods
Active participation in the final workshop, which will respond to the latest developments in the sports industry and where students are expected to present thier own knowledge of the particular case study.
