Course objectives
This course is intended as an analysis of the concept of militant democracy. Main objective of the course is to explain the concept of militant democracy (including its criticism) and its impact on counter-extremism policy. Students should be able to understand the contemporary discussions about defense of democracy.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction into the study of militant democracy; 2. Development of the concept of militant democracy, its criticism and its use in the counterextremism policy; 3. Concept of enemies of democracy; 4. Discursive defence of democracy (including constitutional engineering) 5. Monitoring of enomies of democracy; 6. Limits of freedom of speech; 7. Limits of freedom of assembly; 8. Limits of freedom of association; 9. Other limits of freedom. 10. Countering the violent subversion; 11. Military defense of democracy; 12. Resistance against non-democratic regimes.

Assessment methods
Each week: lectures, class discussions (including students presentations) Students will receive a final letter grade (A-F) for the semester based on the following components: 1/3 Presentation of position papers; 1/3 Seminary thesis; 1/3 Final written exam. Grading: 56-60: A 51-55: B 46-50: C 41-45: D 36-40: E 35-0: F.
