Course objectives
The aim of the course is to think and discuss deeply themes from the basic course ENS 106 "Ecological Economics". The students will develop their ability of critical reading and discussion. The obligatory reading is based on the texts recommended for the baasic course.
At the end of the course students should be able to discuss critically basic economic concepts and argue about their alternatives from the field of ecological economy.
Having understood the discussed consequences and context of mainstream economic concepts and their critique, the students will be able to make reasoned decisions and to choose and prefer more environmentally responsible solutions in their daily life. They´ll also be able to take part in wider public discussion about these themes, based on acquired knowledge.
One part of this seminar is a block of lectures of a german lecturer Ralf becker about "Current Financial System and Local Currencies".
Main aim of this part of the seminar is to work with information on our current financial system and its environmental concequences and its alternatives. The students should be able to understand and explain the scheme of reginal currency systems.
Syllabus
  • Introduction of and discussion about presumptions of mainstream economic theory
  • ecological and environmental economy - definition, main concepts
  • economic localisation as an example of alternative economic concept
  • practical examples of "economic dissent"
  • "Současný finanční systém a lokální měny" (blok přednášek německého lektora)

Assessment methods
conditions of succesful finishind of the seminar:
* active participation during the seminars
* absence of 25% maximum (3 lessons)
* presentation of a short paper
* wiritng of an abstract of a longer scholarly article
