Course objectives

Upon completion of this course the student will have a general knowledge of the social and environmental problems in the period of Late Roman Empire. He will be able to compare them with those of today. In seminar he will discuss these problems of Antiquity and of today objectivly.

Syllabus

• The fall of Roman civilization represents the model example of civilization crisis.
• • Development of the Roman empire - basic characteristics.
• • Origin and roots of Roman prosperity.
• • Economic development.
• • Crisis of civic society, deepening the gap between poor and rich, relationship between the state and the poor.
• • Consumerism, lifestyle.
• • Crisis of traditional religion, new religions.
• • New life values, cosmopolitisms.
• • Xenophoby, clash of different cultures.
• • Proposals to solve the crisis and their inspirative value for the contemporary world situation. Freedom in the period of Dominate.
• • Attitude of citizens toward the empire and Rome.
• • Attitude of empire toward the poors.
• • Code of honor and ethics of barbarians (natural and social conditions of changes in the understanding of ethics of period of great migration of nations.
• • Christian ethics according the legends about saints.
• • Christianization of barbarians – barbarization of Christianity?
• • Ethics of the so called transitory periods of the history.
