Syllabus
  • 1. Revival of the nationalism in Poland after 1989: - Why we should study the nationalism, when it is marginal? - The definition of the nationalism and internal divisions: • components of the ideology • typology of the nationalist doctrines - Characteristics of groups, organizations and leaders: • issue of establishing many Nationalist Parties: between the fondness behind the lost political power from before 1945 but contemporary with marginalisation • evolution of “All-Polish Young people” after 1989: reconstruction of organization based on interwar patterns in years 90., in the role of the League of Polish Families (Liga Polskich Rodzin, LPR) youth organization in 2001-2007 years, turn in the side of the radicalism after defeat from 2007, project to establish the Nationalist Movement • National Rebirth of Poland – evolution from references to polish traditions of national radicalism for adopting models of national-revolutionary organizations operating in contemporary Europe • subculture of skinheads in years 90. and of Autonomous Nationalists in the first decade of the 21st century - Radical and moderate currents of the polish nationalism: • causes of political success of the LPR: parliamentary club in 2001–2007, presence at the European Parliament in 2004–2009, participation in the government coalition in 2006-2007 • the political extremism of nationalist environments, decay of Jewish symbols, signs of the nationalism amongst football supporters (case of the zine "Way of the Legionnaire") • riot during March of the Independence in Warsaw in 2011-2012 - The phenomenon of left-wing nationalism: • Polish National Community party – paradoxes of the hybrid: of the neopaganism, the anti-Semitism, the plebeian nationalism and the socialism • Nationalist Party "Homeland" - the social support as the main sign of the national solidarity 2. Nationalist thought at the beginning of the 21st century: - Seeking the new doctrinal identity after 1989 and between traditions from interwar period and reception of contemporary formulas form Western Europe: • problem of the continuation after forty five years of the lack of ability of legal action, outdatedness of doctrines from before 1945: issue of the disappearance of national minorities (Eastern-Slavs, Germans, Jewish) • doctrinal explaining anti-Semitic views in the country with the few Jewish community: of civilization anti-Jewish concept as the reason of anti-liberalism • attempt agreeing on the idea of the ethnic separatism with the Catholic morality by the National Rebirth of Poland (various sources of inspirations: New Right movement, International Third Position, integral traditionalism doctrine) - religious faces of polish nationalism: • the secular current as the exception • differences between contemporary Catholics (accepting teaching the Vaticanum II) and Catholic Traditionalists • an attempts to create the national religion (neopagans) • relation between religious inspiration and attitude to the democrac 3. Alternative visions of Europe: - Criticism of the EU as the new form of the German hegemony in Europe: • fear of the aspiration of Germans to the reinstatement borders from 1937 • the politics of the regionalization as the method of disintegration nation-states • reforms of the EU as the way of the institutionalization of dominance of Germany over remaining Member States - Relations with Russia: • tradition of the geopolitical sense of direction to Russia (and of powers of the Entente) from times of the World War I • dual ratio to the Soviet Union: between the ideological hostility and the opposition to subordinating Poland to the Soviet empire and the guarantee of the maintenance post-war border west • National Democratic Party: return to the concept of close cooperation with Russia safeguarding against reconstructing German influences in Centre Europe • reasons of distance of the majority of nationalist parties towards Russia - Projects of the confederation of Central Europe • vision of Poland of Three Seas: projects of the regional integration under the leadership of Poland from 1939 to the beginning of the 21st century • conception of Slav Community of Polish National Community party: the alliance of similar nations or the reconstruction of the Eastern bloc? - “modern nationalism” of National Rebirth of Poland: • the idea of the alliance of revolutionary nationalisms as the reply to the globalization • resignation from traditional geopolitical alliances and conflicts with neighbouring nation-states
