Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce to the students the basic topics in neuroscience, ranging from the anatomy of the nervous system, the inner workings of neurons, to the function of brain systems that give rise to perception, thought, emotion, cognition and action.
Learning outcomes
After completion of the course student will be able to:
- describe basic anatomy of nervous system;
- define basic neurophysiological terms;
- explain neurophysiological mechanisms of perception, information processing, movement, memory and learning, behaviour, motivational systems, emotions and feelings;
- explain the relationship of defense behaviour and stress response to the aetiology of some mental diseases.
Syllabus
  • 1) Brain and behavior, environment of the neuron. Synapse.
  • 2) Information processing in the nervous system.
  • 3) Physiology of sensory organs. Somatosensory system.
  • 4) Motor system. Autonomic system.
  • 5) Learning and memory. Language. Functional asymmetry of the hemispheres
  • 6) Arousal mechanisms, sleep. Modulatory systems of the brain. Limbic forebrain and motivation.
  • 7) Implicit and explicit emotional processes.

Teaching methods
Lectures, self-study.
Assessment methods
Fundamental Neuroscience course is completed by a written test: the student write answers to three open questions within one hour. Every question will be assessed A-F. To pass the exam, student must obtain at least grade E in each assessed question. In the last part of the test student is required to draw selected anatomical structures into schemas of the brain.
The examination date will be specified during the last lecture.
