Cíle předmětu
Statistical Data Analysis with SPSS is a course intended for students with few or no experience with the statistical software SPSS. It is designed to introduce the basic statistics necessary to analyze data provided by various quantitative studies using this statistical package. The course will offer students an overview of the following issues: 1) the basic notions in statistics - population, parameters, descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, sample, variables etc.; 2) creating data files in SPSS, 3) running statistical analysis, reading outputs and interpreting the results of the analysis.

  • Seminar 1: Course management, introduction – strategies in statistical analysis: research problems and questions, measurement, variables
  • Seminar 2: Data display and databases. Working with databases - data files, entering data, merging files, syntax and output files – how to work with OPEN, SAVE, EDIT, VIEW, MERGE, UTILITIES in SPSS
  • Seminar 3: Variable transformation and selecting cases – how to work with TRANSFORM, RECODE, COMPUTE, COUNT, RANK CASES and SELECT CASES
  • Seminar 4: The basic of one-dimensional analysis – the distribution of categorical and continuous data – how to work with DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS –FREQUENCIES, DESCRIPTIVES, EXPLORE, GRAPHS
  • Seminar 5: Normal distribution and normal standardized distribution. Z-scores
  • Seminar 6: Testing hypotheses. Inference statistics
  • Seminar 7: No class - reading week
  • Seminar 8: Univariate analysis – testing hypothesis and comparing groups using means – how to work with MEANS, T-Test, ANOVA
  • Seminar 9: Basic bivariate analysis – conditional tables – how to work with CROSSTABS
  • Seminar 10 Statistical correlation and its measurement – correlation coefficients and graphic representation – how to work with CROSSTABS, CORRELATE – BIVARIATE, GRAPHS - SCATTERPLOT
  • Seminar 11: How to detect the influence of a third variable – working with sub-samples and partial coefficients – how to work with CORRELATE – PARTIAL CORRELATION
  • Seminar 12: Factor analysis – how to work with DATA REDUCION → FACTOR ANALYSIS

Výukové metody
The course will be given in the form of workshops, where both teacher and students give oral presentations. Questioning, explaining, collaborating, and demonstrating will be used as teaching methods and strategies. Students are expected to complete weekly readings prior to class, prepare their weekly assignments, and attend classes. There will be regular homework during the semester. Homework (including Output) should submitted no later by Wednesday (before the class). Turn the electronic documents (as either a *.doc file or a *.pdf file) into the homework vault in is.muni.cz (https://is.muni.cz/auth/el/1423/jaro2013/SOC758/ode/).
Metody hodnocení
The course ends with an exam based on the theoretical and practical issues presented during the semester: a written test (30 minutes) designed to evaluate the theoretical issues, and a practical test (60 minutes) aimed to evaluate SPSS usage in solving a statistical problem.
