Course objectives
What do gender and sexuality look like in contemporary East Central Europe? How have they been shaped historically? What are the most pressing issues in the realm of gender equality that we face in the region today? Sociologists, anthropologists, historians and political scientists studying East Central Europe will come to discuss their current research on the history of sexuality in Czechoslovakia; state-socialist forms of motherhood in Hungary; sexuality, religion and moral panic in today’s Poland, Slovenia and across Europe; gender and East-West migration; and gender and corruption in Russia and Iceland.
Learning outcomes
Students will learn about current issues in contemporary European gender and sexuality. They will understand historical context in shaping of gender and sexuality.
