Prerequisites

Familiarity with basic demographic concepts and methods (demographic rates, population projections). Familiarity with quantitative data and principles of quantitative data management and analysis. Software skills - STATA, R. Completion of Advanced demographic methods course (might be offered as a seminar in SOC932-Data analysis)..

Course objectives
The goal of the course is to effectively use demographic data for decision-making. Course content focuses on the production and utilization of demographic knowledge in the public sphere (need evaluation in social, health and caring services, description of spatial mobility and settlement patterns, public transportation use, school enrollment trends and predictions etc.) as well as in businesses (purchasing power analysis, labor force structure evaluation and prediction etc.). It will also include policy impact analysis.
Learning outcomes
students can carry out small-area population projection, can predict population size and structure (by age, sex, and education) and can prepare population analysis/projection according to the needs of the client can conduct policy impact analysis
