Course objectives
The course serves as an introduction to the reflection of the selected ethical theories and values orientation important for the professional performance in the field of social work. Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to support the students ability to reflect their own values, the values of the profession and the underlying ethical theories.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to understand the importance od ethics in social work practice; to apply pieces of knowledge from the theories to the examples from practice and to understand their own values and the theoretical fundaments.

  • Relevance of ethics for social work
  • Fundamental moral categories in conception of human being from the point of view of the important religious systems
  • Theories of ethics - virtue ethics; ethics of eternal law; theories of the social contract; deontology; utilitarism; antioppressive theories; discourse ethics; ethics of care
  • Professional values in social work
  • Perception of clients (service users); professionalism and managerialism
  • Professionalism and codes of ethics
  • Models of the way of performing social work in practice and solving of the dilemmas
