Course objectives (in Czech)
The aim of the course is to exercise students’ critical thinking and develop their critical awareness of discursive devices with ideological underpinnings employed in the media. The students will learn key concepts and tools of methodology known as critical discourse analysis and will apply these in practice, investigating media representations of minorities. They will examine the dialectical relationship between language and society, with the focus on the link between language, power and ideology.

  • 1. Introduction to the course 2. Critical discourse analysis: key concepts and tools 3. Metaphor and ideology: the cognitive theory of metaphor 4. Rhetoric and persuasive strategies: pathos, ethos, logos 5. Multimodal analysis; visual grammar 6. Gender, identity and the media 7. Racism in the media 8. Media representations of Muslims 9. Propaganda and the media; students’ presentations 10. The Third World in the media; students’ presentations 11. Portrayal of distant suffering in the media; students’ presentations 12. Representations of sexual minorities in the media; students’ presentations 13. Final summary and revision; students’ presentations
