Course objectives
The aim of the course is to present students the basic terms and concepts of the media research methodology. The aim of the seminars is to train skills for academic writing, to learn how to interpret data and the outputs of research, and to learn how to write a systematic review. Completing the course is also crucial for mastering the theoretical bachelor thesis. The complexity of the course is based on the requirements of the application sphere, as elaborated in the market analysis.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able: to know basic concepts of media research methods; to understand the basic terms of the social science methodology; to be able to interpret research data and outputs; to learn the procedures for writing a systematic review.
Syllabus
  • Organization of the course: 1. Introductory lesson, organization of the course. Seminar: Electronic and information resources. 2. Science and scientific knowledge. Theory of science. Seminar: Writing the academic text. 3. Major research paradigms of social sciences. Media studies as a scientific discipline. Purpose and usage of the media research. Seminar: The research question and its formulation. 4. The role of theory in media research, the theoretical article, the systematic review. Seminar: Systematic review - research questions. 5. Logic and design of the social science research. Seminar: Theory of argumentation. 6. Overview of the main quantitative, qualitative and mixed research techniques. Seminar: Systematic review - feedback to research questions. 7. Selection of the research sample. Validity, reliability. Seminar: Working with data, types of variables. 8. Survey. Content analysis. Seminar: Systematic review - methods of searching and their description. 9. Experiment in media research. Seminar: Public opinion polls and their interpretation. 10. Qualitative research and constructivist paradigm. Seminar: Systematic review - feedback to search methods. 11. Sources and analysis of data in qualitative research. Seminar: Interpretation of research results, research limits. 12. Ethics in media research. Seminar: Systematic review - synthesis of knowledge. 13. Conclusion of the course.

Teaching methods
Lectures, seminars, assignments, teamwork, group projects.
Assessment methods
The course is concluded by an exam - written test. The written test will include both the knowledge questions and it will also examine the student's ability to think over the given methodological problem. Students will also continuously attend seminars with compulsory attendance, the output will be the seminar work - systematic review produced in groups of students.
