Course objectives
The course is an introduction to environmental sociology. It explores basic terminology, approaches, theories and authores. The aim of course is to foster a critical thinking and an ability to analyze contemporary environmental discussions.
Syllabus
  • Structure of course Environmental sociology:
  • 1) Sociology, as if nature (not) mattered. Beginnings and development of environmental sociology, historical context.
  • 2) Nature? What is it? Social concepts of nature.
  • 3) Individualization – society in which everyone i salone. Characteristics of contemporary society.
  • 4) Society of treadmill of production. Characteristics of contemporary society.
  • 5) I consume, therefore I am. Consumption and its role in contemporary society.
  • 6) Social construction of environmental problems or whatis reality.
  • 7) Science gives us valuable data. Science and its role in the identifying environmental issues in modern society.
  • 8) Risks. Sociology of risk.
  • 9) Environmental movement as important actors.
