Course objectives
Course provides basic information about the basic trends and key concepts of sociology. It is organised in four thematic blocks: (a) sociology as a form of knowledge, (b) individual and society, (c) structures of power, (d) social change. The course seeks to uncover the interdependence between the biographical experience of individual social actors and historical dynamics of the institutional structures of society.
At the end of this course, students should be able to understand basic concepts of sociology.

  • Rise and fall of functionalism in sociology.
  • Historical sociology and critical theory of society.
  • Postmodernity and the crisis of the modernization project.
  • Globalization and the future of sociology.
  • Culture, socialization and the individual
  • Social interaction and social relationships
  • Social norms, conformity and deviance.
  • Stratification, socia classes and ethnic groups.
  • Statem, government and political power.
  • Ideology and cultural change.
