Course objectives
This course will provide information on the current state of the environment and problems related to it on the national and worldwide scale. The students will be acquainted with the political and legal means of environmental protection and care, and with the barriers of their application and its effectiveness.
Syllabus
  • 1. Environmental policy, definition, aims, subject. Basic concepts. Basic social attitudes to the environment. 2. Renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. Renewable sources and electric power production in the Czech environmental policy. 3. Environmental policy players. Participation of the public in environmental protection. Aarhus Convention. 4. Global environmental problems - oozone layer depletion, acid rains,global warming, marine pollution. 5. Basic strategies to control environmental pollution a) without the state intervention, b) with the state intervention. Instruments to control the pollution I. 6. Wastes and the ways of legal regulation of their production and disposal. 7. Pollution reduction and regulation tools II. 8. Environmental friendly products and agriculture. 9. Forest as a natural resource. 10. Environmental protection and the public health. 11. Topics of the day in the Czech environmetal legal regulation. 12. Animals as the subject of protection. Problems of biological diversity. Methods of regulation. 13. EU environmental policy.

Teaching methods
Interactive lectures and discussions. Participation of students in the form of one short presentation related to the selected topic in the program.
Assessment methods
Short presentation/written assignment on one selected topic in the program. Written test, blank form. Requirement at least 60% of right answers.
