General English at the B1 CEFR level. The knowledge of specialist discipline-specific vocabulary and grammar covered in the BDAJ0121 English 1 course.

Course objectives
The course objective is to develop students' receptive (reading, listening) and productive (speaking, writing) English language skills and to enhance their knowledge of selected grammar chapters at level B1+. The course also seeks to develop in students the knowledge of specialized discipline-specific vocabulary and skills for effective doctor-patient, doctor-doctor and doctor-nursing staff communication.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students should be able to communicate in English with patients, colleagues and doctors in situations typical for hospitals. Students can use vocabulary and grammatical structures typical of the specialisation “nurse”, and can read and record medical documentation.
Syllabus
  • 1: Food and nutrition. Dietary plans, allergies, intolerances. Nutritional assessment and advice. 2: Personal care. Patient's hygiene. Showing empathy. Wound assessment and treatment. 3: Elimination assessment and description. Describing bodily functions. Presenting a patient case. 4. Patient discharge. Evaluate levels of independence. A patient discharge plan. Explaning medication. Making appointments on the phone. The seminar focuses on practicing vocabulary and grammar structures necessary for nursing profession including the practice and development of communicative skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing).

Teaching methods
The course takes the form of seminars (discussions, pair work, group work), home preparation and e-learning. The above mentioned topics will be consolidated using all the study skills (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). Supplementary materials used in the seminars will be provided by the lecturer.
Assessment methods
Prerequisites for the exam: timely submission of homework, active attendance (you can only miss one lesson) in the lessons. Assessment is based on the results of the final examination which tests the knowledge from both the autumn and spring semesters. The prerequisite for the oral part is to reach a minimal score of 60 per cent in the written part of the examination.
