Course objectives
At the end of this course, student will be able
* to understand the difference between common microbial flora, transient findings, contamination and pathogens in different localisations
* to know the most common pathogens causing infictions of various organs/systems
* to understand basic indications of microbiological examination, sampling and transportation of samples for each organ/system infection
* to be able to interprete basically the findings

Namely, studets shlould know this for
* different parts of upper and lower respiratory ways, lungs and middle ear
* different parts of gastrointestinal tract
* different parts of urinary tract
* different parts of genital system
* different parts of central and peripherial nervous system
* bloodstream, bones, muscles and various tissues
* skin, eyes, external ear

  • Topic 1 Survey of microbes. Pathogenicity and virulence. Survey of microbiological methods. Use of molecular methods in clinical microbiology. Topic 2 Basis of sampling and material transport to microbiology, order forms
  • Topic 3 Desinfection and sterilisation
  • Topic 4 Antimicrobial agents
  • Topic 5 Etiology and diagnostics of sepsis and endocarditis (incl. sampling methods)
  • Topic 6 Etiology and diagnotics of CNS infections
  • Topic 7 Hospital infections - charakteristics, main causing agents, prevention and registration
  • Topic 8 Etiology and diagnotics of bacterial infections of respiratory ways, ear and nose
  • Topic 9 Viral respiratory infections
  • Topic 10 Urinary infections - causative agents, diagnostics, interpretation of results
  • Topic 11 Etiology a diagnostics of pyogene and anaerobic infections
  • Topic 12 Basis of clinical mycology and parasitology
  • Topic 13 Causative agents of diarrhoea, stool examination

Assessment methods
It is necessary to take part on education. Unjustified absences may be reason for not giving a credit. The education is finished by an examination, that is oral (student takes one of 20 pairs of questions).
