fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are:
- learning to operate the light microscope while observing prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells
- understanding the principle of risk evaluation for selected genetic diseases based on family anamnesis
- understanding and practicing the selected molecular methods used for examination of some hereditary and infectious diseases, and the basic methods of gene engineering
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to:
- operate the light microscope
- perform some of the basic cytochemical staining techniques in observation of bacterial and human cells
- deduce the impact of selected DNA mutations on these processes
- evaluate the risk of numerical and structural aberrations resulting from meiotic non-disjunctions and chromosomal translocations
- evaluate basic numerical and structural aberrations in assigned human karyotypes
- evaluate the risk of monogenic hereditary diseases with autosomal inheritance in patients based on assigned family anamneses of the diseases
- perform basic molecular-genetic diagnostic examinations of some hereditary and infectious diseases (PCR, restriction digest, gel electrophoresis), and to interpret the obtained results
- explain selected basic techniques of gene engineering and their application in medicine, and, with knowledge of the used method, to select the clones of cells with an inserted gene
Syllabus
  • Practices requiring students' presence:
  • Microscopic structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
  • Cell cycle. Mitosis. Meiosis.
  • DNA diagnostics of pathogenic bacteria. Analysis of human genotype.
  • Gene engineering.
  • Autonomous homework:
  • DNA replication
  • Expresssion of genetic information
  • Human karyotype

Teaching methods
laboratory practice, autonomous homework
Assessment methods
All practical classes are mandatory.
Students will bring their own writing materials and the respective printed protocol. Download protocol for each practical class from the Study materials, print it and study it in advance. Lab shoes, lab coats and disposable gloves are not required.
Requirements for course completion: full attendance in the classes, activity in the classes, all protocols completed and checked, even the four protocols intended for homework (DNA replication; Expression of genetic information; Human karyotype; Autosomal inheritance).
Potential absences are addressed individually and must be excused by the Office for Studies within 5 working days from the beginning of the absence and introduced in the IS. Student is required to write an essay in the length of 2 pages on a given topic in case of excused absence. Find the instructions for essay writing in the Course-related instructions in the IS, bring the essay printed to the teacher who specified the topic and be ready to answer the teacher's questions regarding the topic.
In case of unexcused absence, credit is not awarded.
