Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
Course objectives
The main objectives of the course are to become oriented in the environment of the chemical laboratory and its equipment, to acquire simple laboratory procedures and techniques, to practice common separation procedures and become familiar with handling standard laboratory machines. Students will learn to handle laboratory data into the lab reports, to solve the problems and derive conclusions.
Learning outcomes
Students
- will be familiar with regulations for safe handling, use, and disposal of chemicals
- will be able to handle with basal laboratory equipment and follow proper procedures
- will pipette and weigh according to the principles of good laboratory practice
- will understand the relationship between the composition of different solutions and their pH value
- will be able to describe the general composition and role of the buffers, and prepare a buffer
- to describe the essence of the formation of insoluble and poorly soluble compounds, to identify factors that can influence the insolubility of compounds
- will be oriented in relations between a structure od bioorganic molecules and their reactivity
- will explain principles of chromatographic methods, their applications and utilization
- will be able to apply photometric methods for determination of solution concentration
Syllabus
  • Handling chemicals. Laws on the handling of chemical substances and preparations.
  • Introduction, organizational guidelines. Safety and health protection at work in the laboratory, principles of first aid.
  • Measuring containers / aids, plastics. Heating, cooling, weighing. Cylinders.
  • Measuring small volumes of liquids, calibrating pipettes, expressing accuracy and precision.
  • Preparation of solutions.
  • Filtration, dialysis, ultrafiltration, centrifugation. Concentration of samples.
  • Measurement and calculation of pH solutions of acids, bases and salts, hydrolysis, pH-meters.

Teaching methods
The course is realized in laboratories. Students are doing simple experiments according to the instructions in the textbook. On the base of results, they prepare the lab-reports.
Assessment methods
The condition for giving credit is:
  • the completion of all exercises, incl. submission of all lab reports,
  • credit from the subject ZC011,
  • and achievement at least 70% success from tests writing during the semester. If the student does not achieve at least 70% success, he writes a credit test. Credit is then given upon successful completion of the credit test (achievement of at least 46% success rate). Students have the opportunity to repeat the credit test only once. Depending on epidemiological situation, assessment method may be altered. The current conditions will be posted in IS (Study materials – Course-related instructions).
