Syllabus

• (sem) Saccharides, structures, configurations, cyclic forms. Oligosaccharides, polysaccharides.
• (labs) Saccharides, reduction properties. Molecular models.
• (sem) Lipids and steroids: structures
• (labs) Solubility and emulsification of lipids, soap, detection of unsaturated fatty acids, detection of cholesterol.
• (sem) Properties of amino acids. Proteins, secondary and tertiary structures.
• (labs) Amino acids and proteins: ionization and isoelectric point, solubility and precipitation, colour reactions.
• (sem) Test (Chemistry of saccharides, lipids, steroids, and aminoacids). Intermolecular forces and adsorption. Adsorption and liquid chromatography.
• (sem) Glycolysis, glycogenesis, glycogenolysis.
• (labs) Adsorption chromatography of azo dyes (TLC). Column chromatography of carotenoids. Determination of theophylline concn. (HPLC).
• (sem) Desaturation of fatty acids, eicosanoids, biosynthesis of cholesterol.
• Proteins, biological value, nitrogen balance, synthesis of urea.
• (sem) Test (metabolism of saccharides, lipids, aminoacids). Aerobic phosphorylation.
• (labs) Spectrophotometry, calibration solutions, absorption spectrum of Fe(III)-salicylate, determination of salicylate concentration.
