Course objectives
At the end of the course student will recognize selected drug classes and pharmacological profiles of representative drugs from groups of drugs selected in the curriculum with the particular attention paid to drugs influencing the lipid and sugar metabolisms and preparation for parenteral nutrition. They will have knowledge of possible nutrition impact on treatment of pathological states and of xenobiotics entering the nutritional chains.
Syllabus
  • LECTURES:
  • 1. Neurotropic and psychoactive drugs. Drugs of abuse.
  • 2. General and local anaesthetics.
  • 3. Pharmacotherapy of hypertension, angina pectoris, heart failure and arrhythmias.
  • 4. Drugs used in management of homeostasis and the treatment of blood clotting.
  • 5. Nutritional pharmacology. Natural fiber, aminoacids, fish oils, fatty acids. Toxicants and food additives. Tannins, glutamate, food preservatives and food colourings. Dietary factors affecting drug efficacy. Drug effects on nutrient status.
  • 6. Chemotherapy of microbial and viral diseases.
  • 7. Excursion into the Centre of medicinal plants of the Masaryk University, Faculty of Medicine (Kraví hora).

Teaching methods
Curriculum offers attendance at lectures read by teacher of pharmacology.
Assessment methods
During the studying the students have to prove active knowledge of pharmacology acquired. The students have to pass the exam: final written multiple-choice test. In the Final Exam students are asked to answers to multiple-choice questions. Only 1 correct answer is possible to each question. The test contains 30 questions generated randomly for each single student. One point is granted for each correctly answered question. 0.5 point will be distracted for an incorrect answer to the multiple-choice question. The summary of the score obtained is evaluated as follows: A = 91-100% out of the maximum score; B = 81-90%; C = 71-80%; D = 61-70%; E = 51-60%; F = failed with the score below 50% of the maximum score.
