Course objectives
The subject of Medical Microbiology is based on the basics acquired by students in the Bachelor's degree program.
The aim of the theoretical part is to provide extensive information on the properties of medically important microorganisms and pathogenesis, clinic, epidemiology and therapeutics of infectious diseases and detailed information on microbiological investigation procedures, principles of indication of microbiological examinations, proper collection and delivery of infectious material and correct interpretation of the results with respect to the clinical condition of the patient including the possibility of antibiotic therapy. The practical part of the preparation is to gain practical experience and skills in the analysis of biochemical properties, in antigenic, proteomic and molecular biological analysis.
Upon completion of the course the student will be oriented in detailed diagnosis of individual etiological agents of infectious diseases: bacteria, viruses, parasites and yeasts and fungi. The student will be able to diagnose specific etiological agents based on detailed knowledge of biochemistry, antigenic structure, protein composition, and molecular biological properties of microorganisms. Will be acquainted with both basic and specialized microbiological procedures, including knowledge of apparatuses available in current laboratory microbiological practices. Will be able to interpret the result of the laboratory examination. Will be trained in combination skills, understanding the wider context of infectious diseases. Will be able to focus on the issue of nosocomial infections. Will know the principles of rational antibiotic therapy and antibiotic policy at national and international level. Will be familiar with the principles of quality management in medical microbiology.
Learning outcomes

  • Introduction to clinical microbiology, history of microbiology
  • Methods of microscopy, colouring procedures in microbiology
  • Cultivation methods, preparation of cultivation soils
  • Biochemical methods of bacterial identification
  • Immunological methods for the identification of micro-organisms
  • Proteomic methods of bacterial identification
  • Molecular Biological Methods for Identification of Microorganisms
  • Immunology (specifics of antimicrobial immunity)
  • Epidemiology of individual infections (spread of infectious agents, transmission routes, epidemic investigations and anti-epidemic measures)
  • Nosocomial infections, their prevention and prophylaxis
  • Principles of antibiotic therapy, antibiotic policy
  • Computing in microbiological laboratories
  • Special theoretical part:
  • Identification of individual micro-organisms species or groups thereof using specific biochemical, immunological, proteomic and molecular biological methods:
  • Enterobacteria (salmonella, shigella, escherichia, etc.), vibria and campylobacter
  • Gram-negative non-fermenting rods and cocobacilli (pseudomonads, burkholderie, acinetobaktery, legionella.)
  • Cultivatingly demanding gramnegative rods (haemophilus, bordeles, francisels, brucellas, etc.)
  • Gram-negative cocci (neisserie, moraxelly, branhamelly, etc.)
  • Gram-positive cocci (staphylococci, streptococci, enterococci, etc.)
  • Gram-positive aerobic rods (bacilli, listeria, corynebacteria, nokardia)
  • Anaerobic microbes (clostridia, actinomycetes, peptostreptococci, bacteroids, etc.)
