Course objectives
Upon completion of the course the student will be skilled in recent histopathological techniques performed at the pathological workplaces, will be oriented in application of the appropriate laboratory procedures due to the nature and quality of the biological material and the diagnostic purpose.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to: work in most histology laboratories; Process material for histological examination in light microscopy (material sampling, fixation, embedding in different types of sealing media, slicing histological sections on different types of microtomes including freezing, colouring histological slices, also by some special methods, assembling of cuts); explain the principle and practically manage the implementation of some histochemical and immunohistochemical methods; basics of tissue processing for electron microscopy both transmission and scanning.
Syllabus
  • Reception and identification of tissue material - laboratory information system, on-line and off-line communication, control system, supervision, performance reporting, hygiene rules in histopathological operation.
  • Preparation of histological samples, work with   microtomes
  • Diagnostic specimens output quality assurance.
  • Practice under the guidance of a pathologist with a discussion microscope.
  • Practice aimed at teaching the results of standard colouring methods to illustrate individual tissue components in different colouring methods.
  • Methods of complex examination of organ puncture biopsies of liver, mammary gland, prostate.
  • Methods of biopsy examination of endoscopic samples.
  • Cytodiagnostic screening.
  • Application of immunohistochemistry in histopathological diagnostics.
  • Immunohistochemical diagnosis of epithelial and neuroectodermal tumors.
