Course objectives
At the end of the course student should be able to prescribe representatives of individual drug classes in the form of individually prepared pharmaceutical preparation and bulk drugs. The student should be familiar with pharmacological profiles of therapeutic and adverse effects of particular drugs with an attention paid to common drug-drug interactions.
Syllabus

  • VLFA0722c Pharmacology II- practicals

    Autumn semester 2016

  • Day 1 (Monday)
  • Introduction, instructions. Distribution of co-talks.
  • 1/ANALGESICS.
  • Opioid analgesics. Pharmacotherapy of pain. Opioid addiction therapy. Prescription and practical use of analgesic preparations.
  • 2/NON-STEROIDAL ANTIINFLAMMATORY DRUGS, DRUGS USED IN GOUT, ANTIPYRETICS.
  • Mechanisms of action and classification of anti-inflammatory and anti- rheumatic drugs (NSAIDs and the 2nd-line agents). Drugs used in therapy of gout.
  • Getting ready for the next lesson: Central neurotransmitters and sites of drug effects in CNS. Basic psychical functions.
  • Day 2 (Tuesday)
  • 3/PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS – INTRODUCTION. ANXIOLYTICS, HYPNOSEDATIVES.
  • Classification and terminology of psychotropics. Review of their mechanisms of action. Pharmacology of anxiolytics and hypnosedatives. Mechanism of action of benzodiazepines. Prescription of hypnosedatives and psychostimulants.

  • 4/ANTIDEPRESSANTS.
  • Classification and terminology of antidepressants. Review of their mechanisms of action, adverse effects, interactions.
  • Co-talks.
  • Getting ready for the next lesson: Allergic reactions – causes and mechamisms. Revision of PNS pharmacology - β2 mimetics, parasympatholytics. Glucocorticoids.

  • Day 3 (Wednesday)

  • REVISING TEST I (Revision test with subsequent discussion) Lesson 1 – 4.
  • 5/CASE REPORTS I.
  • Selected case reports on drugs from previous lessons. (including Pharmacology I lessons).
  • 6/ H1 ANTIHISTAMINES, ANTIASTHMATICS.
  • Classification and clinical use of H1 antihistamines. Pathophysiology of bronchial asthma, sites and mechanisms of action of antiasthma drugs. Prescription of antitussives, expectorants, antiasthmatics.
  • Co-talks.
  • Getting ready for the next lesson: Structure of bacterial cell, basis of antimicrobial therapy.
  • Day 5 (Friday)
  • 7/ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS I.
  • Classification, mechanisms of action, combinations of antibiotics and chemotherapeutics.
  • Co-talks.
  • 8/ANTIMICROBIAL AGENTS II., CHEMOTHERAPEUTICS, THERAPY OF INFECTIOUS DIARRHEAS AND UROINFECTIONS.
  • Drugs acting in intestinal and urinary infections.
  • Co-talks.
  • Getting ready for the next lesson: Physiology of blood pressure regulation. Revision of PNS pharmacology-α1 sympatotholytics, α2 sympathomimetics, β sympatholytics.
  • Day 6 (Monday)
  • REVISING TEST II (Overhead-test with subsequent discussion). Lessons 5 - 8.
  • 9/HYPOLIPIDEMICS, THERAPY OF OBESITY.
  • Therapy of hyperlipoproteinaemia and hypercholesterolaemia, review of drugs and their mechanism of action.
  • Co-talks.
  • 10/ANTIHYPERTENSIVE AGENTS.
  • Introduction, classification, diuretics, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, Ca 2+ blockers, and other hypertensives.
  • Co-talks.
  • Getting ready for the next lesson: : Revision of blood coagulation; patophysiology of cancer disease.
  • Day 7 (Tuesday)
  • 11/ANTICOAGULANTS AND THROMBOLYTICS.
  • Fibrinolytics, haemostatics, therapy of haemopoietic disorders.
  • Co-talks.
  • 12/PHARMACOLOGY OF ANTICANCER DRUGS.
  • Classification, mechanisms of action, side effects.
  • Co-talks.
  • Getting ready for the next lesson: : Drug dosage forms and external routes of drug administration, revision of drug prescription. Autonomic nervous system – catecholamines, atropine. Myorelaxants. Revision of prescription of drug dosage forms for external use.
  • Day 8 (Wednesday)
  • FINAL PRESCRIPTION TEST (includes dermatology).
  • 13/REVIEW OF DRUGS USED IN DERMATOLOGY.
  • Adstringents, epitelizants, antihidrotics, antiinfectives. Therapy of acne, psoriasis and seborrhea. Classification, mechanisms of action, side effects.
  • 14/GENERAL AND LOCAL ANAESTHETICS
  • Combined and balanced anaesthesia. Signs and stages of general anaesthesia. Inhaled and injected anaesthetics - classification and characteristics. Review of drugs used in premedication.

Teaching methods
Drug classes specifics from the Syllabus are read firstly by the teacher and presented in video-programmes if available followed by discussion and training of drug prescription with the use of drug compendia and the computer database of the preparations registered in the Czech Republic (AISLP). Each student is asked to get ready as a homework to report on a specific pharmacological topic.
Assessment methods
The participation in practicals is obligatory and registered. To get credits a student has to pass 4 written tests: a) 2 on special drug presriptions (assessed individually by the teacher), b) 2 multiple-choice tests on knowledge of topics taught (more than half correctly answered questions required).
