Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to: understand basic principles and values in palliative care; identify and resolve the most common ethical dilemas in end of life care; assess and manage the common symptoms of advanced disese; practice supportive communication with severly ill patient and his family; know the organisation of pallitaive care in Brno
Syllabus
  • Basic concepts in palliative care: incurable disease, terminal disease, quality of life, palliative care, palliative medicine
  • Common symptoms of advanced disease: pain, dyspnea, anorexia, nausea, vomitting, diarhoea, constipation, anxiety, deúression, delirium
  • Psychology and communication in palliative care
  • Social work in palliative care
  • Spiritual needs and spiritual support in terminaly ill
  • Ethical issues in end of life care: advanced directives, withdrawal and witholding of life prolonging therapy, euthanasia, physician assisted suicide
  • Organisation and integration of palliative care in health care system

Lectures, class discussion, discussion of clinical cases, visits in hospices
Assessment methods
80% presence on lectures and seminars is required, written essay about some aspect of end of life care
