Course objectives
The aim of this subject is to get acquainted with psychiatry, different psychiatric disorders, psychiatric treatment and specifics of the care of patients with mental disorders. Students will learn basic psychiatric terminology, disorders of basic mental functions (consciousness, emotivity, perception, thinking, memory, intellect and personality) and symptoms of specific mental disorders (schizophrenia, affective disorders, neurotic disorders, stress-related disorders, eating disorders and personality disorders). Another topic will be basics of therapy in psychiatry: pharmacotherapy and other biological treatment modalities, psychotherapy. Students will also be instructed about specifics of communication with psychiatric patients.

  • Introduction. general psychiatry - Principles of organization of psychiatric care - Psychiatric Diagnosis - Failure of individual mental functions Special psychiatry. The most common manifestations of mental illness: - schizophrenia - Affective disorder - Disorders caused by psychoactive substances - Anxiety and other neurotic disorders - Disorders caused by stress - Eating Disorders - Personality disorders - Mental disorder in the postpartum period Biological Psychiatry. Therapy in psychiatry - Principles of treatment of mental disorders - Pharmacotherapy and other biological therapies child psychiatry - Basic issue of child psychiatry

Teaching methods
Lectures
Assessment methods
Lessons are in the form of oral lectures. The final examination is in the form of written multiple-choice answer test. To complete the subject, a student has to attend the lessons, only one excused absence is allowed. In case of more absences, substitution is required. Substitution is usually in the form of the written essay on a selected topic or short stay at one of the wards of Department of Psychiatry. The means of substitution can be arranged with Dr Barteček, deputy for education. The final exam is in the form of written test. The test is multiple-choice answer test with only one correct answer. To succeed in the test at least 6 out of 10 questions have to be answered correctly.
