Cíle předmětu
The aim of the course is to provide basic knowledge of chemistry, which is necessary for the understanding of chemical principles applied in other subjects, especially in biochemistry. Information on the composition and chemical components of the main materials used in dentistry is presented.
Výstupy z učení
Students will be able:
  • to understand basics of general, inorganic and organic chemistry to the extent necessary for the further study of biochemistry.
  • to apply general physicochemical laws to processes in living organisms.
  • to describe the chemical properties of the most important biogenic elements and essential compounds of importance in medicine, nutrition and toxicology.
  • to describe and discuss the properties and reactions of organic and bioorganic compounds important for the understanding of biochemical processes.
  • to describe and discuss the composition and chemical nature of the main materials used in dentistry.
    • Osnova
    • Acid-base reactions, electrolyte dissociation.
    • Buffers, buffer systems in the body.
    • Energy in chemical reactions, kinetics, chemical equilibrium.
    • Redox reactions, biochemically important redox systems.
    • Biologically important reactions and relationships between organic compounds (alcohols, citrate cycle, transamination, oxidation and reduction).
    • Dental materials.
    • Selected elements and their compounds.
    • Structure and properties of saccharides. Homo- and heteropolysaccharides. Glycosides. Nucleosides.
    • Fatty acids, triacylglycerols, phospholipids, glycolipids.
    • Steroids, steroid hormones.

    Lecture.
    Metody hodnocení
    Final examination is only written. The test consists of two parts:
    - computer test containing multiple choice questions or free-answer questions
    - paper-based test, which is focused on the active knowledge of structural formulas of the most important compounds, expression of important biochemical reactions by chemical equations and the ability to formulate the basic physico-chemical relationships or drawing graphs.
    Final exam topics are posted in Information System (Study materials – Course-related instructions).
