Course objectives
Translation seminar is based on close reading and careful translations of the texts prepared in IS e-learning and faculty LMS. The students' translations are uploaded into IS (or moodle) and the discussions are organized in the subject discussions forums.
At the end of the course students should be able to:
* to understand the basic features of equivalence translations;
* to learn how to deal with basic features of Czech equivalent translations;
* to understand the basic principles of translation theory in practical translations.
Throughout the semester students are encouraged to link theory in the classroom to practice via practical tasks.

Syllabus
  • Topics:
  • * Poetry or Prose? Richard Bach and his Seagull as an example of different translation approaches.
  • * Everything is Illuminated. How to translate deformed texts? Czech translation context of language deformations.
  • * Bohumil Hrabal. Is this the text you would expect? We will translate English into Czech and compare the original work of Hrabal with the translations.

Active participation based on the daily work in the online environment of the moodle course is really essential. Even though this is an on-line course, the load of the work is really huge and the practical translation require the right amount of time.
PLEASE NOTE! Due to the quarantine in semester Spring 2020, the credit requirements will be fulfilled only by online means. All the tasks will be evaluated online and the feedback will be only provided by mail and further online means in IS MUNI.
