Course objectives
The aim of the course is to equip students with sufficient understanding of the nature of dyslexia and the difficulties it causes in foreign language learning. They will be presented with relevant teaching techniques and methods to further the language learning processes to dyslexic individuals.
Learning outcomes
Having completed the course, students will be able to: - understand the nature of dyslexia as a specific learning difference; - understand impact of dyslexia on first and foreign language learning; - understand specific issues for Czech dyslexic pupils learning English as s foreign language; - understand the principles of accommodation of dyslexic learners, and based on new awareness, design/adapt their own teaching materials to suit them.
Syllabus
  • 1) The nature of dyslexia. 2) Specific learning difficulties associated with dyslexia. 3) Identification of dyslexia. 4) The effect of dylexia on foreign language learning. 5) Accommodations of dyslexic learners in a ELF class. 6) Phonological and orthographic awareness. 7) Teaching vocabulary and grammar. 8) Teaching listening and speaking. 9) Teaching reading and writing. 10) Assessing dyslexic language learners.

Teaching methods
Class discussions, discussion forums, groups projects, presentations, reading, materials design and its presentations; Depending on the situation regarding the pandemic, classes will take place either on site or online.
Assessment methods
For a successful course completion students will actively participate in class discussions, group work, group projects and presentations. In preparation for every seminar they will work on assigned readings, videos and materials design.
